Reina nestled her back against the trunk of a thick, old, tree and sighed, lightly banging her head against the trunk. The branch was wide enough for her to place both feet on it and draw her knees up. She unfolded the letter that was just delivered to her and held it on her lap, not really wanting to read it. Blue ink. Her mother.

    Dear Reina,

That wasn't a good sign. Her mother referred to her as Reina when she was serious.

I understand your distress over your father's activities as of late. Please try to understand that he is only trying to secure an acceptable future for you. You may not understand right now, but he is doing what is best for you. You may not like it, but you are a pureblood with notable lineage. This makes you eligible for a good marriage, something I did not have and I regret. It was my choice, but I do not know if it was the right one. Seven years is not long, little Raven, you will soon spread your wings and fly, your father and I want to make sure you have a strong branch to make your perch when you do.
    your loving mother

Reina stared at the letter and then crumbled it up. Her mother actually agreed with her father on this. She couldn't believe it. She drew her knees up and buried her face in them.

Raven walked with hands in his pockets, very depressed. The boys dorm wasn't really a place he could talk with Lawr since the girls had decided since they could enter their dorm that they would. He wasn't really sure he wanted to talk to Will either.
Sighing, he glanced around and seeing Reina frowned. She looked as depressed if not more so than him. Going up to the tree he leaned against it and didn't say a word, offering silent company. If she wanted to talk she would. If not, he would just stay silent and see if she wanted him to stay or leave.

Reina noticed Raven leaning against her tree. She wiped her eyes and moved closer to him. "Hey Rae." She said softly, not really looking at him. She did notice he didn't look much better then she did, but she said nothing about it. If he wanted to tell her, he'd tell her. If he didn't, she liked having him here next to her.

"Hey,Reina," Raven replied softly. He noticed the crumpled letter and debated whether or not to ask about it. Taking a quick glance at her face he decided against it. She had obviously come out here for solace just as he had.
Instead he gave her a small smile and teased, "You trying to live up to your initials? A raven perching in the trees?"

Reina laughed lightly, grateful he hadn't asked about the letter or her mood. She stuck the letter into her pocket and turned to him. "I could ask you the same thing, Drake." She swung her legs over the branch, and leaned against the trunk. "What's a duck doing out of his pond?" She teased.

Raven cocked his brow and pretended to be insulted. "A duck? First I'm called a unicorn, now a duck."
He shook his head, his mouth twitching. "How is it that I am compared to animals that have no correlation to me? At least you were witty using my last name for your jab."

Reina snickered and jumped out of the tree, landing beside him. "It's cause you're named for animals, one, and two because you're so damn animalistic, you snake." She shoved him playfully, and then turned to him, moving her hair out of her face. "So..." She turned toward the water. "What brings out here?"

Raven stuck his tongue out at her for the animal remark. At her bringing up why he was out here, he sighed. At least she seemed to be in a better mood. He shrugged. "I don't know, probably the same thing that had you come out here. Am I wrong?"

Reina snickered, shaking her head. She looked at him, grinning slightly and then scoffed, looking out toward the water. She stared at the water for a long time. "Not unless your parents are going behind your back to arrange your future marriage to Will." She looked at him, her dark eyes were cold and emotionless.

Raven winced. He hadn't meant that their problems were exactly the same, just that they were family related. Taking his hands out of his pockets, he crossed his arms over his chest. He didn't want to say sorry, because he knew how that would sound. "I think it would be strange for them to try and do that unless they really didn't want any grandchildren," he joked.
Becoming serious, he sighed. "I might not know what that's like, but I do know about your life being dictated and planned without your say so. Not being able to voice your opinion without getting reprimanded and being reminded of your place and honor, and all that other stuff."

Reina grinned a little. He understood better then Will did about what was happening to them. "I hate it." She confessed. "I hate being a pureblood, I hate being a Black, and I hate knowing this is the only reason I was born. I wish I was a boy. I wish I had a sister, or a cousin, or there was just someone else." She crossed her arms and shook her head, and then she looked at him again. "How bad is it for you?" She asked softly.

Raven shook his head even while a bitter and understanding smile crossed his mouth. "No, you don't. You don't mean that. I know you think you do but, think about it. If you weren't a girl, or a Black, then you wouldn't be you. Everything you've been through and experienced in your life has made you who you are. If you were a boy, the expectations of you would be even worse."
Looking up at the sky, he frowned before giving a bitter laugh, "As for me, let's just say that if it weren't for Lawr being my best friend...I'd be pretty messed up."

Reina tried not to laugh at what he told her. "How can the expectations for a boy be any worse then the expectations I have already? I'm expected not only to marry my second cousin, but to breed for these people, all in the name of blood purity." She shook her head, and then stopped when he went on. She looked at him. "That bad?" She whispered, moving a little closer to him.

Raven looked down at his shoes with a frown. "Like I said, I can't say I know exactly how it is for you, but I can take a guess. It's gotta be harsh only to be born to get married and have children. The custom goes way back, even in Muggle societies. Like the Egyptian Pharaohs. They believed they were the gods reincarnated, so in order to keep the 'holiness' I guess you could say, they had them marrying their own siblings."
He glanced over at Reina. "Males have it just as bad. It's not greener on the other side you know. We're expected to provide and sire offspring, but also be influential and follow our father's footsteps. Whether we want to or not."

Reina nodded. "So your dad wants you to be like him, then?" She studied Raven's expression. "And you don't want to be like him, do you?" She sighed, sinking down and sitting in the grass. "They can't let us make our own choices. They want to make all our choices for us. They act like they know us better then we do."

"Well," Raven smiled. "That's why we rebel as much as we can in the ways that we can. Like being friends with Lawr."
Raven laughed. "That's why I think it's cool that he's a wizard too. I couldn't immagine having to keep all this from him." He looked at Reina. "I'm sure that you rebel in tiny ways too, yes?"

Reina smiled. "Yes, like being friends Lawr, and half bloods and kids from other houses, not just Slytherin and Ravenclaw." She sighed. "I never really thought of it like that though. It just seems natural to be friends with people because you like them, not because of who their parents are, or what their parents are." She shrugged.

Looking surprised, Raven quickly stated, "Don't think that's why I'm friends with the people I am. You know, because of my father not liking it. It's just an added bonus, you could say."
Sighing, Raven frowned before a smile came to his face again. "I meant, the way I rebel is by doing other things I know that he dislikes. Like tying to bribe the hat to Sort me into Hufflepuff. Uh, inside joke...."

Reina laughed. "What? You? In Hufflepuff? There was no way the sorting hat would have ever let you in there, no matter what you said. Now Ravenclaw he might have bought, or even Gryfinndor, but never Hufflepuff." She grinned at Raven. "And I didn't mean you were friends with Lawr and the others just because of your father, just that the very fact you associate with them in the first place is already rebelling against the values he tried to indoctrinate you with."

Raven's grin faltered before he looked up at the sky again. "Yeah. Well, he might not care that much these days anyway."
Frowning, his eyes narrowed. "He's seeing this Pureblood witch. If he can get an heir on her....I guess you could say, I'd be free. I thought that way, then got to thinking. I don't want her to get pregnant. Not because I'd be jealous or anything, but...I don't want my sibling to go through what I did."

Reina frowned. "I sort of understand. My father paid my mother to get pregnant with me. I mean, they were friends in school and they're still friends they live together and everything, but my dad...he uh...he doesn't like girls like guys are suppose to when they get older. But...being a pureblood Black he had this duty to have an heir. And I was suppose to be a boy, of course, so I could pass on the name of Black to another generation, but my mother tried to keep me from being used like that, though she didn't have much of a choice. She got her way with me being Nox instead of Black, but I'm still going to be used to pass on the name of Black whether I like it or not. Stupid Will should have been a girl."

Raven couldn't help the snort of laughter that escaped at the thought of Will being born a girl. "You know, even if you were born a boy and him a girl, your position would still be the same, right?"
He ignored the other comment, because he wasn't sure if he really wanted to know if she was saying what he thought she was saying. "Urm....yeah, well, that's why I have my mom's last name too. I guess it was an act of defiance on her part."

Reina nodded. "Yeah, one of us should just switch genders, that or go find someone else to engage Will to." She sighed bitterly and then thought about Raven's other comment, leaning differently against the tree. "Yeah, defiance is probably a good word. What's she like, your mum?"

Biting his lip, Raven wondered if he should tell her, then sighed. He glared up at the sky then turned his head to face her. His eyes were colder and held a hint of challenge. "My mum hates magic. She was afraid to send me here, but thought Hogwarts was better than sending me to Durmstrang."

Reina frowned slightly and reached out and touched his hand. "That must be hard for you. Having a mother who doesn't really understand magic and how much it's apart of you. I take it your dad wanted to send you to Durmstrang, then? Did he go there or did he go to Hogwarts?"
