    A Break from the Madness

Shelby looked around at all the trees surrounding the lake and the various students scattered among them. She didn't really feel the desire to strike up a conversation with any of them, so she headed for a slightly secluded spot that she'd never seen any of the other students go to. It was a bit beyond the lake, but anyone who sat there could still see what was going on by the lake, even if the other students couldn't see them.

She smiled to herself as she sat down and made herself comfortable. She dug around in her bag for the small diary that her mother had given her for her last birthday and opened it, flipping to a clean page even though she wasn't planning on writing anything at the moment. There was something oddly comforting about the blank page, like it was just waiting for her to fill it up with observations, thoughts, and secrets. She let her quill hover over the page as she sat quietly observing the other students, perfectly content.
