Hilary sat down in front of the the window, her knees pulled up to her chest, watching the sky for the sign of an owl with a letter for her.
It had been two weeks since she had heard from her sister, and she was really worried now. Something wasn't right; Emma never, ever took this long to write, no matter how busy she might be at the time. A million possibilities raced though her mind, each one getting a bit worse than the last.
She would have preferred to sit in the owlery, since she knew that's where the owl she had sent a couple of days before would automatically go. But it was messy, noisy and crowded in there. So, she had chosen a window she knew faced the same direction as the one in the owlery, so hopefully she'd be able to see it from there.
She stared out the window, waiting. She wasn't sure how much longer she'd be able to stand this.
