Tristyn watched the students file into class. He hadn’t expected much so he was neither disappointed, nor satisfied – the best thing to be sometimes. He knew he would get to know each of them in time, some better than others.
Once everyone was seated in their desks, he turned to face them. A large map of the world hung behind his desk and served as his backdrop as he addressed the first years.
“My name is Tristyn Malfoy, you may address me as Professor Malfoy or Sir. And before you ask, yes, I am related to the infamous Draco Malfoy though I never did manage to gain as much popularity as he did – particularly in the female department,” he winked.
“Your former Professor left quite urgently but she was able to explain what you’ve covered so far. But our main concern now is with your exam. From what I understand, you lot have managed to complete the tasks given quite acceptably but what I want to know is, do you know what you were doing?”
He took a moment to gaze directly at the students, his pale grey eyes taking in their eager, inquisitive and even nervous faces.
“Something you should know about my teaching style,” he continued seriously. “I would not encourage you to memorize a bunch of facts and then regurgitate them in class. I expect youngsters to make use of the fine brains they possess by engaging in critical thinking and analytic evaluation. In other words, you don’t have to have read the entire Standard Book of Spells, you can theorize and offer your own ideas and opinions in class. That is what we will be doing today. Think of it as a mini test whereby I can see how good you are without a book or a wand.”
The blonde wizard flicked his wand at the map and the hanging piece shot up and rolled itself neatly at the top, revealing a simple chalkboard. A few more swished and questions appeared on the board.
What is a Charm?
What differentiates Charms from other magical fields, like say Transfiguration?
What are some of the limitations of Charms?
List three examples of charms and what they accomplish e.g. levitation charm, enables objects to fly.
“Please copy down these questions and answer them to the best of your ability. And try to show some originality seeing as I want your opinion, not Mrs. Gawshokes,” he smirked.
“The answers will be a total worth of ten points which you can earn easily if you put some thought into them. I will be awarding an additional point or two depending on how hard you worked and you creatively you tackled the questions. Cheating is, of course, not allowed though I doubt it will deter you so my only word of advice on that matter is not to get caught,” he said, thinking it was about time his Slytherin nature made an appearance.
“Good luck, ladies and gentleman, you may start now. Make sure your parchment has your name and house on it or your marks will be given to the house with the least points at the end of class.”
