    Samantha's Bakery Empty Samantha's Bakery

Post by Guest Mon 19 Jul 2010, 09:09

Samantha entered the bakery slowly, tired after her day of classes. Things were certainly different after the purge and rumor had it that some students had been expelled. Rooms had been mysteriously appearing and disappearing and overall, the atmosphere had been one of confusion and fear.

But her bakery never changed. The four large ovens still gleamed in the corner and the counter to one side lay spic and spam, ready to be used. One look towards the larder was also enough to show that nothing had been disturbed in there.

Sighing appreciatively, she inhaled the scent of baking and made her way to the counter. The first thing she needed was to make a list. Getting out her quill and a spare piece of paper, she did exactly that.

    Samantha's Baking Projects:

    • New York Style Cheesecake
    • Quiche

Pinning the list up by the door, she smiled in satisfaction and took an apron hanging from a hook nearby. Tying the garment neatly around her waist and gathering up her hair in a neat ponytail, she turned towards the counter and got to work.

Raven came up to where Sam had her bakery before wondering if he'd find her up here. There was nice smells coming from it like before, so he supposed that her cheese or whatever got cleared out. Knocking he entered the room and saw the girl at work. Canting his head, he cleared his throat. "Um...can I help at all?"

Irene walked into the room. All of the surfaces gleamed with cleanliness. She loved the area already.
"Hi," she said shyly, "do you need any help? I mean, you look like you're doing alright but I love to bake and really haven't gotten the chance to here." She hoped the girl would allow her to work there.

Samantha turned at the sound of the two newcomers. One was Raven and the other a Gryffindor judging by her robes.

"Hello," she said, turning to the girl, she introduced herself. "I'm Samantha."

They wanted to help which was very nice of them but Samantha daunted Raven had ever been inside a kitchen for anything other than eating. Just his awkward stance was enough to confirm her suspicion.

Addressing the girl, she said "It's okay if you want to bake here... just... I keep the place really clean..."she trialed off, hoping the girl wouldn't think her a clean freak - though in all rights, she supposed she was one.

Glancing over at Irene, Raven felt his eye beginning to twitch. Oh, no. There was no way he was staying here if Irene was. He took a step back, a look of horror on his face as he pictured everything that could possibly go wrong in a kitchen. He knew the Gryffindor was working on not being so klutzy, but he really didn't want to see how that was going.
"Um, look. I'll come another time, okay?"

Samantha watched Raven back out of the kitchen quickly, wondering what was wrong. He had kept throwing furtive glances at the Gyffindor suggesting she was the reason for his impromptu departure, maybe he and the girl didn't see eye to eye?

Putting thoughts of her schoolmates aside, she concentrated on the bowl of mixture in front of her. This was the first time she was attempting both the dishes on her list and she was more than a little anxious as to how they would turn out.

Irene nodded, offended by Raven's quick departure. Oh well, there was more to life (she was discovering) than pleasing everybody. She glanced at the list pinned to the door, grinning when she saw that they were making cheesecake. Back at home, her dad taught her how to make real cheesecake the way it was made in diners in New York.
"Have you made the crust yet?" She asked the girl, nodding towards the list. "Oh, and my name's Irene."

Samantha glanced at Irene scanning the list.

"It's... my first time. I've never made a cheesecake before but I've been reading..." she trailed off shyly. Before yesterday, the dark haired girl could proudly says she was able to bake any dish in all of England but now...

Maybe Irene could help, she was grinning at the list and that gave Samantha courage. "Could you teach me?.."

"Sure," Irene smiled, "do you have a recipe or should we use mine? I use my grandmother's, I have a long story about how it's the best in New York but you probably don't want to hear about that. Obviously, you bake a lot, what do you do with all of the baked goods? I don't know about you but I can't finish an entire cheesecake!" As she spoke, Irene moved around the kitchen, easily locating the 9" spring pan and parchment paper.

Samantha debated on how to best answer the girl but decided to be truthful in the end. She wouldn't give too much information but she would certainly not lie. Besides, if the girl laughed at her, well, then... Samantha tried not to think about that.

"We have a bakery back home," she admitted quietly, head lowered and eyes fixed on the shining floor tiles.

"And we can use your recipe. The cheesecake is actually for someone... as is the Quiche. I just store them for... well, you know."

"You have a bakery?" Irene's eyes shone, "I wish I could bake, like for real, not just at home. Okay, first we need graham crackers, do you have those? We need to crush them up." She guided herself around the kitchen, finding a rolling pin a a bag but she couldn't find any graham crackers.

Vanessa, looking around her her, finally finds Irene in a room that resembles a bakery.
"Irene! Hi- Isn't this...Samantha's Bakery? I've heard about it. The pies and brownies are supposed to be amazing to point of almost heavenly...", she says with an excited glint in her eye.
She was one of those people that loved sweets, and could easily trade her soul for a lifetime supply of it. I guess she was lucky she had a pretty fast metabolism.
"Do you guys need any help? I don't really know how to cook, but I can do okay if I have detailed instructions..."

"Hi Nessa," Irene smiled at her house mate, "I don't know about brownies, but we're making cheesecake. You'll have to check with Samantha if you'd like to stay, I'm just here to help out." She dug impatiently through her bag until, with a triumphant smile, she pulled out a blue binder that was covered in a white dust which looked like flour. Thumbing through the book, she imagined herself at home with her little pink apron on and her face streaked with cocoa. Her mother's words rang in her ears, "Honey, you can't buy your friends with food."

Vanessa smiled and nodded, "Oh. Okay. Well, I was just wandering around. - You look really at home here... Anyway, I should probably go."
Vanessa smiles and makes her way out of the bakery. She wished she could stay, but she had some homework to catch up on.
She made her way back out of the door, and accidentally caught her foot on the side of the doorway.
Vanessa came crashing down with a thump, and she- along with a bound book- were sent sprawling on the floor.
    "Ow..I'm such a klutz..."
Noticing the absence of the book she looks around frantically, "Where is it? Oh no!"
Then directed to Reine in a muttered whisper, "That was my diary! What if someone finds it? what if someone reads it?"

Having wished for some Graham crackers, Samantha handed them to Irene and turned to Nessa. "You're welcome to stay but please, please maintain cleanliness in the kitchen," she stressed.

"And don't worry about your diary," she continued. 'We're still technically in the Room of Requirements so you can wish for your diary and the room will comply. That's how I get all my ingredients without bothering the house elves," she finished quietly.

Vanessa, still on the floor, looks up at Samantha with a very grateful expression, "Thank you! Oh, and don't worry about keeping things clean. I can be a bit of a clean freak.- Sorry, Im not entirely sure if we've been introduced...I'm Vanessa, but you can call me Nessa. I like it better."
She got back up,dusting herself off after that fall, and wills her diary to reappear. When she next opens her eyes, the diary is right in front of her, "Ha! It worked! That's fantastic!"
Vanessa smiles at Samantha, "Thank you...again"

"Here," Irene pinned the recipe for the cheesecake on the door, "I'll do crust if you get working on the cake." The recipe read:

    Ingredients

    15 graham crackers, crushed
    2 tablespoons butter, melted

4 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese
    1 1/2 cups white sugar
    3/4 cup milk
    4 eggs
    1 cup sour cream
    1 tablespoon vanilla extract
    1/4 cup all-purpose flour
    Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9 inch springform pan.
In a medium bowl, mix graham cracker crumbs with melted butter. Press onto bottom of springform pan.
In a large bowl, mix cream cheese with sugar until smooth. Blend in milk, and then mix in the eggs one at a time, mixing just enough to incorporate. Mix in sour cream, vanilla and flour until smooth. Pour filling into prepared crust.
Bake in preheated oven for 1 hour. Turn the oven off, and let cake cool in oven with the door closed for 5 to 6 hours; this prevents cracking. Chill in refrigerator until serving.

Vanessa read over the recipe, commiting it to memory, and says, "Is this all for the cake alone, or everything together?"
She stares at the list, not entirely sure if she could do it without blowing something up.
    Perhaps she should just watch?
The last time she had ever baked anything she had been eight, and she had been with the house baker.
Her nanny had not been watching her carefully enough, and when she had had the chance, Vanessa snuck out of her room and had wandered into the kitchen.
The baker(Head chef, whatever you want to call it) had been nice enough to let her stay and watch. She had even let Vanessa help with the cake.
"I dunno, It's been an awfully long time..."She says, not really to anyone.

"You're welcome," Samantha told Nessa and turned to the recipe sheet now pined up alongside her own baking list. "Could you please help to turn on the oven, Nessa, while I do the cake mix and Irene does the crust?"

turning to the counters, she extracted all the ingredients she would need and then went to the larder for the cream cheese. Once the ingredients were neatly assembled in front of her, she took out a fresh mixing bowl and started to work.

Relived she wouldn't have to do something that could prove disastrous, Vanessa smiles at Samantha and does as she's told.
She turns the knob on the oven to 350* F and watches, content, while the two girls work.
Vanessa could tell right away, that they both knew exactly what they were doing. It was pretty amazing, really.
"You guys really enjoy baking, don't you? I always thought it would be pretty neat to learn, but I never really got to..."

"I've been baking since I was very little..." Samantha admitted shyly while cracking open the eggs into the mixing bowl. Irene hadn't laughed at her for having a bakery so maybe this girl wouldn't either?

Finished with the eggs, she reached for the bag of sugar and measuring cup, tilting the sugar crystals carefully so that only the amount they needed would fill the cup.

Vanessa nodded and smiled almost shyly. It was obvious Samantha was very nice, but shy, and it was making her own former shyness to reappear.
"That sounds like it must've had been really fun. I bet you know all there is to know about baking..."she says with awe.
Anyone who could cook, was already high up in the list of people she respects, or/and she highly esteems. Vanessa really loves food, so anyone could can cook is hero-like.

Samantha almost wanted to laugh at the comment about baking being fun. If they thought that, they should spend a day in the kitchen with her aunt. She wondered how long these girls would be able to stand "Tie your hair back, girl, your hands are filthy, girl, didn't I teach you the right way to mix, girl" and other such variants.

To Nessa, she only said "Well, not everything... I didn't know the first thing about New York Style Cheesecake.... Irene is a huge help," she gestured timidly at the list and then the girl working beside her.

Vanessa snorts in an unlady-like way, then smiles.
"You don't give yourself that much credit...I'm sure you're both very proficient in the art of baking..." Smile
Vanessa sits down on one of the stools, fiddling her fingers.
She watches as they both do their work very skillfully, and smiles.
"If you had been a muggle-say, if you never became a witch- would you have studied to go into culinary school and become a renowed chef/baker?"

Samantha winced at the questioned, hoping the girl hadn't noticed it. How could she tell Nessa that despite her studies and her grades here at Hogwarts, she was still going to be a baker. Her aunt had made that clear even before hte girl had replied, accepting her position at the school.

"I... I mean, I'll end up being a baker anyway," she admittedly quietly, hoping the admission wouldn't be accompanied by the feeling of dread it usually was. No luck this time too.
